One of New Zealand’s trickiest magicians, Andre Vegas, is set to perform at Buckland Hall this weekend, Saturday April 18.
Some of Vegas’ favourite tricks include a chainsaw illusion that takes a novel spin on the classic ‘sawing a lady in half’ trick.
“People really like that illusion, especially in the magic industry,” he says.
“I’ve done other big escapes, such as one where I’m upside-down in a straitjacket, hanging from a burning rope. In another, I have to get out of a box, which nailed closed, before a truck runs it over – at the end, I’m driving the truck.”
Vegas’ fascination with magic began when he was a child. Taken to see variety shows, he was mesmerised by the magicians. He began performing magic aged 12, becoming a professional while only 14.
Making a living from magic can be a tough – confidence and attitude are the keys to breaking into showbusiness.
“When I was a kid, people asked what I was going to do when I grew up, and I’d say I’m going to be a racing car driver and they’d laugh and say you can’t do that for a living.
“Then, I said I’ll be a racing car driver and a magician, so they’d laugh twice as hard. However, since then, I’ve actually done both!”
Plenty of audience participation is also on the cards and all audience members go into a draw to win magic sets. These contain popular tricks suited to people of all ages.
“I think magic appeals to everyone, whether they’re kids or adults,” he adds.
