Pukekohe is about to become a little more artsy with the Auckland Area Floral Art Designer of the Year (September 9) and Auckland Area Day (September 10) heading to town for the first time in more than 30 years.
Hosted jointly by the Pukekohe and Papakura Floral Art Clubs, the event will bring members from across Auckland together on September 9 to create more than 100 floral arrangements.
This year’s event will showcase what Pukekohe has to offer, Papakura Floral Art Club member and Ardmore resident, Pat Murdoch says.
“I’m so pleased about where we live and I always have been, but Pukekohe also has so much going for it too. It’s vibrant with a huge art community, it’s buzzing.
“I’m looking forward to showing all the other Auckland members how creative we are here – we’re not their poor cousins!” she laughs.
Hosting the event in south Auckland also opens the door to Waikato-based floral arts club members, some of whom have found travelling to the events has been a bit of a stretch in the past, whenever they are held further north.
Murdoch says local businesses can also expect to be busier as out-of-town attendees are already planning their itineraries.
“We have at least 20 people [members] coming to stay in Pukekohe, if not more, and they’re all quite excited about visiting us,” she adds. “We’re expecting they will be getting out and about, visiting businesses and shopping.”
The themes for this year’s entries from Holi (the Hindu festival of colour) and Rhythm and Vines to fabulous fiesta, garden party and razzle dazzle.
The overall Designer of the Year category, named celebrations, will challenge competitors to create a freestanding design. The winning artist will take home the title along with a sash, trophy and prize package.
The exhibition will be followed by the Auckland Area Day at Franklin Baptist Church on September 10.
Auckland Area Day will see a floral art demonstration by Floral Art New Zealand judges Leigh Greenstreet, Lynne Causer and Fay Edgecombe.
Attendees can also expect raffles, a plant sales table and a trading table.
