Road works are never convenient. They can be frustrating, disruptive and, at times, difficult for businesses and customers alike to navigate. But after years of conversations around improving our town centre infrastructure, we are now seeing those much-needed upgrades happen – and that’s an important step forward for Pukekohe.
This week, upgrade works have been underway at the King Street and Hall Street intersection following the discovery of significant structural damage beneath the existing crossing points earlier this year. While contractors originally began installing upgraded pedestrian crossings, they uncovered serious deterioration in the concrete base layers beneath the road surface, requiring full replacement before the project could continue.
As a result of consultation with surrounding businesses, partial road closures and traffic management are currently in place, with works expected to continue until this Sunday, May 25, weather dependent.
We know these closures are creating disruption, particularly for businesses operating along King Street. But it’s important to remember these works are happening for a reason – to improve the safety, functionality and long-term future of our town centre.
Communities often ask why upgrades take so long, but infrastructure projects of this scale are complex, and unexpected issues can sometimes be uncovered beneath the surface. While frustrating, addressing these problems properly now helps prevent larger issues in the future.
Throughout the works, pedestrian access to businesses remains open, and we encourage the community to continue supporting the incredible businesses located on King Street and surrounding areas. These businesses are still open, still operating, and still need the support of our community during this temporary period. For larger trucks, freight operators and heavy vehicles, where possible, we encourage using alternative routes or rear service access to businesses during this period to help avoid congestion and keep traffic flowing safely through the town centre.
Now is the time to make a conscious effort to shop local, grab a coffee, book that appointment, or stop in and support a business you may not usually visit. Temporary disruption can have a real impact on day-to-day trade, and community support during this period genuinely makes a difference.
The Pukekohe Business Association team and our Good Guys ambassadors are also out and about throughout the works, checking in with businesses, assisting where possible, and helping reinforce that King Street remains open for business.
