An Onewhero farmer, Rosemarie Costar, has taken up the reins as Auckland Federated Farmers’ new president, replacing Franklin Local Board chair, Alan Cole.
Named Dairy Advocate of the Year at Federated Farmers’ recent advocacy awards, Coster will now concentrate on representing farmers and growers, primarily in rural Franklin and the Rodney District.
“This is very humbling,” she says. “I was filling in [recently] for our Dairy Chair and, sitting in the room looking around at the people on our Dairy Council, I was reminded just how amazing they are. They are a formidable group, and it’s a real honour to work alongside them.
“I will really miss them. Dairy is where my heart is, but sometimes changes need to happen, and I hope I can lead as well as the many amazing people who have led before me.”
Federated Farmers’ national dairy chair, Karl Dean, says he is sorry to lose Costar but the dairy sector’s loss is Auckland’s gain.
“She’s incredibly engaged, always active, and always asking questions on behalf of others,” says Dean.
“Leaders such as Rosemarie take the skills and passion they’ve developed in dairy advocacy and apply them more broadly for their province and for Federated Farmers as a whole.”
