Auckland will host the New Zealand Game Developers Conference (NZGDC) for the first time in nearly a decade, as the country’s game development sector reaches $1 billion in revenue – up from $759 million in 2025.
Held at the New Zealand International Convention Centre from September 30 to October 3, NZGDC will bring together game developers, industry leaders, investors and emerging talent from across Aotearoa and overseas.
Mayor Wayne Brown will open the conference on October 1.
Hosted by the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA), the conference will feature more than 100 industry events and form part of Auckland Games Week, running from September 26 to October 3.
Brown says game development is a key part of his focus on tech and innovation to create high-value jobs and export income.
“We’re backing industries like gaming because they attract overseas investment and turn great local ideas into global products, bringing talent and new opportunities to the city,” Brown says.
“The conference is another win for us as it reinforces our position as the country’s leading centre for tech, innovation and creative industries.”
Association executive director and conference organiser Joy Keene says Kiwis have a good track record of producing globally successful games.
“Our local game development sector is growing at more than 20 times the global average year-on-year,” she says.
“Growth means jobs and, as a weightless export industry, game development presents a real opportunity for New Zealand to insulate itself against disruptions in the broader world economy,” Keene says.
As part of the conference programme, the public will be able to experience locally made games at the free Kiwi Games Zone on October 3, from 9am to 4pm.
The conference is sponsored by Auckland Council’s cultural, events and destination arm Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.
