Police say they were quick to find the hiding spots of three men who allegedly fled after a dangerously driven vehicle crashed in south Auckland.
Around 1.20am this morning, September 3, police officers were on patrol when they were alerted to a Mazda Azela car travelling on Church Street in Onehunga.
Senior sergeant Tony Ngau Chun, the Auckland City East Police area response manager, says the vehicle was observed conducting a u-turn before driving at speed along Victoria St.
“Due to the dangerous manner of driving, the vehicle was not pursued.”
Four minutes later, a member of the public notified police of a single vehicle crash on Grotto St.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the same Mazda had crashed through a fence and the offenders had fled on foot, says Chun.
Neighbours assisted with information while patrol units conducted area searches to locate the occupants.
“With Eagle [helicopter] guiding from above, one man was found on Captain Springs Rd and a second on Church St,” Chun says. “Police then received a call about a suspicious person hiding under a vehicle on Grotto St.”
Officers attended and the man was located under the car and arrested.
One of the males was taken to hospital with moderate injuries sustained in the crash.
“Police would like to thank members of the public who were proactive in providing information about this offending,” says Chun. “Dangerous driving has no place on our roads, and we’ll continue to hold these drivers to account.”
A 22-year-old male has been charged with operating a vehicle carelessly and failing to answer district court bail, police say.
He is due to appear in the Auckland District Court today.
