A motorist involved in a crash near Patumahoe last night caused another collision while trying to escape, police believe.
Police investigations are still underway regarding two separate collisions involving multiple cars near Patumahoe yesterday evening (August 28).
As reported previously by the Times, at approximately 6.40pm police were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Patumahoe Road. Following the crash, one of the drivers involved allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to someone who had stopped to assist. Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson (Counties Manukau CIB) explains.
“The vehicle was then driven back towards the crash scene and members of the public and attending police were forced to take evasive action to avoid being struck. The driver then collided with four vehicles including a police car,” she says.
“One person whose vehicle was struck suffered moderate injuries and was transported to hospital. The alleged offender was trapped in the stolen vehicle following the collisions and is now in Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.
“It is incredibly fortunate that nobody else was seriously injured. We could very easily have been dealing with a tragedy.”
Support is being provided to those affected including police. The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination and the road has reopened, police confirmed this morning (August 28).
