Old dogs may struggle to learn new tricks, but it’s never too late for Kiwis, Auckland Council contends.
The joy of lifelong learning is on offer through Adult Learners’ Week (He Tangata Mātauranga), council’s Community Committee chair, councillor Julie Fairey says.
“The incredible range of events offered during Adult Learners’ Week highlights the diversity of interests, experiences and cultures that make Tāmaki Makaurau such a vibrant place to live.
On September 7–13, events are being hosted at libraries (including in Papakura and Takanini) across the region.
People are encouraged to pick up an old hobby or discover something new, from cooking to writing, stop-motion storytelling, language, weaving and much more.
“Our libraries are thriving community hubs where people come together to learn, create, share ideas and make meaningful connections,” Fairey says.
“With more than 70 free events taking place across Auckland, I encourage Aucklanders to take advantage of these opportunities, discover something new and celebrate learning alongside others in their community.”
Adult Learners’ Week is about breaking down barriers to education and creating opportunities for people to explore interests they may never have had the chance to pursue before, Krissy Taylor from Auckland Council Libraries adds.
“This Kaupapa [programme] is led by our Whānau Learning team, who are the driving force behind lifelong literacy initiatives and partnerships across our libraries to help ensure every Aucklander has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
“Whether you’re looking to build practical skills, express your creativity, connect with your culture, start a business, or simply try something new, these free events offer a supportive environment to learn and grow.”
