The arsonist behind the Waiuku Business Park fire last November has been sentenced in Auckland.
Janus Breytenbach, 31, appeared before Judge Ngaroma Tahana for sentencing in the Manukau District Court last month.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to the arson, causing around $650,000 in damage to the Future Post recycling centre, other businesses, and several storage containers leased on the property.
Judge Tahana told the court that while the fire was not sophisticated, it was premeditated. She took into account his letter of remorse, offer to pay $2000 in reparation to the victims, early guilty plea, and time on electronically monitored bail.
Breytenbach was sentenced to two years and four months’ imprisonment.
As of the end of August, a Givealittle campaign had already raised $566,110 for Future Post, exceeding the $500,000 goal.
