A double homicide investigation has been launched following the discovery of two bodies at a Wattle Downs property this afternoon (August 27). An offender fled the scene prior to officers arriving, police say.
As reported earlier by the Times, emergency services attended the property due to reports of a woman found unresponsive. She was pronounced dead. During a search, police also located the body of a man who was also pronounced deceased.
“This is an awful set of events and no doubt unsettling for everyone involved and the wider community,” says Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua, Counties Manukau CIB. “We are now working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Police will be working through the night to find the person or persons believed to be responsible for the deaths.
“We know the community will be understandably alarmed by what has occurred, and we are doing everything we can to locate this person and hold them to account. While this appears to be an isolated incident at this stage, we are unable to rule anything out.”
Cordons remain in place while police conduct a scene examination and residents can expect to see an increased police presence as they make enquiries.
Nearby schools were placed into lockdown as a precaution while armed police responded, but these have since been lifted.
Va’aelua says post-mortem examinations will take place in due course, which will include formal identification procedures.
