Warmer weather with windy conditions forecast for spring

While winter wrapped up with some of the harshest winds recorded in August, according to MetService, spring will bring a range of weather conditions to Auckland.

MetService Meteorologist Kgolofelo Dube says it’s still too early to pin down how the weather will look for the rest of September, but a “mixed bag” of weather systems is on the cards.

“Being early spring, a mix of systems is likely, with either lows bringing wet and windy conditions or highs bringing more settled weather.”

She says the start of September saw cold fronts bringing southerly winds ahead of a subtropical low coming from the north, which led to more “gusty winds” hitting the top of the North Island.

“A subtropical low is a weather system that forms in the subtropics, bringing rain and strong winds,” Dube says.

“The subtropics lie between 23.5° and 35° latitude north and south of the Equator, in our case, south of the Equator. These systems are important because they are fueled by warm, energetic air and often bring strong winds along with significant rainfall.

“A high-pressure system is an area where the air is heavier and more tightly packed than the air around it. This heavier air sinks, which usually makes it harder for clouds and rain to form, hence the ‘settled weather’, the opposite of what happens in a low-pressure system. However, not all highs bring clear skies; depending on their position, they can also lead to cloudy conditions, with light rain or drizzle in some areas.

“Looking further ahead, as we’re only at the start of spring, we can still expect more cold fronts moving through, typically followed by high-pressure systems.”

This means Aucklanders can expect warmer temperatures and windy conditions their way, Dube says.
