The wider South-East Auckland community is encouraged to join the ‘Hīkoi for Hospice’ next Saturday, to support Tōtara Hospice.
Organisers Matt Winiata and Patariki Spellman, who have always been active in the
community, approached Tōtara Hospice chief executive Tina McCafferty with the idea of
bringing the community together to hold a Hīkoi to help fundraise and support the hospice.
“It’s meant to be a walk that everyone can join. It’ll be a maximum of five kilometres, starting and ending at the Totara hub in Manurewa, and then we will have a little community sausage sizzle,” McCafferty says.
“Both Matt and Pat have donated the money to bring the community together, so
we couldn’t be more thankful to them.
“The whole team at Totara Hospice has been blown away by their offer (Winiata and
Spellman) to help bring the community together, and we are so grateful. We are looking
forward to walking with them,” says McCafferty.
Earlier this week, the Takanini distribution centre of Tōtara Hospice was destroyed in a suspected arson, also closing the Takanini Hospice Shop, which is on the same site.
A temporary donation centre has been set up at 42A Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga Heights.
Tōtara Hospice welcomes any donations of good-quality clothing and homeware to help replenish what was lost and continue its vital work in the community.
Furniture donations are also being accepted, and collection can be arranged by calling 09 297 7550.
- The hikoi will start at 10am on September 13 at Tōtara Hospice Main Carpark, 140 Charles Prevost Drive, the Gardens, Manurewa.
