Round one of the 2026 Super Rugby Aupiki is expected to be a must-see as some of the world’s best rugby players go toe-to-toe.
The Chiefs Manawa squad for their opening match against Matatū at Te Kaha stadium (aka One NZ Stadium, Christchurch) appears formidable. After two promising pre-season wins, the team will be tough to beat, coach Dwayne Sweeney expects.
“I’m really proud of the work we’ve put in pre-season particularly from our homegrown locals. We have a lot of debuts this week but I’m confident in their ability to showcase their talent.”
A mix of rookies and veterans, the Manawa has a global flavour including Counties Manukau Heat and Canadian international Shoshanah Seumanutafa, Fiji lock Jade Coates and Rotorua-born Australian international, Carys Dallinger.
The Black Ferns contingent features captain Kennedy Tukuafu, Vici-Rose Green, Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu and Mia Anderson.
