Sports camps kick off at Adair

As thousands of young athletes take part in the AIMS Games, other young Frankliner’s have flocked to Hunua for a sporting stint at The Y Camp Adair.

With four weeks of sports camps already underway, running until September 25, Camp Adair is giving children the opportunity to try activities such as basketball, mountain biking, climbing and more.

Camp Adair CEO Rebecca Russell says camps are designed to provide young kids hands-on experiences while removing barriers including cost and confidence.

“These real-life experiences build confidence, strengthen bonds and can open their eyes to pathways they may not previously have imagined,” she says. “We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial circumstances or sporting ability.”

Schools often select students to attend the camps based on who would benefit most from the experience, rather than only choosing their strongest athletes.

The camps also award a Fair Play Cup, which recognizes teamwork, encouragement and respect over competitive success.

Of the students who attended sports camps earlier this year, 96 per cent said they had tried a new sport they enjoyed.

“Students can arrive feeling nervous or unsure and leave having challenged themselves, made new connections and achieved things they didn’t think were possible,” Russell says.

“The camp experience is a quintessential part of growing up in Aotearoa New Zealand,” she says. “We are determined to help keep it accessible and ensure more young people have the opportunity to take part.”

Situated in the Hunua Ranges and established in 1913, the camp is one of New Zealand’s oldest and largest outdoor camps.
