Mai Lighthouse is the leading social services agency across Franklin and North Waikato.
August is Sorted Money Month — a nationwide invitation to pause, take stock, and take one small step toward a more financially secure future.
Supported by Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission, this year’s theme is simple but powerful: the difference is an emergency fund.
Because life doesn’t warn you before it gets expensive.
A car breaks down. A child gets sick.
The hot water cylinder gives up in the middle of winter.
For whānau already stretching every dollar across rent, power, and groceries, those moments can feel impossible.
Financial resilience isn’t about having thousands of dollars saved overnight.
It’s about small, consistent steps that help you feel more prepared, more in control, and a little less at the mercy of whatever comes next.
One of the most practical places to start? The food budget.
That’s why this August, Mai Lighthouse is running a free Community Cooking Programme — and we’d love to see you there.
Each week we’ll be sharing simple, affordable recipes, practical cooking skills, and ideas for reducing food waste, so your household can eat well and spend less.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress.
If you’d like to join a cooking class or find out more about the free financial mentoring and budgeting support available through Mai Lighthouse, we’d love to hear from you.
Ph: 09 238 6233 | admin@mailighthouse.org.nz and follow us on Facebook this month — we’ll be sharing tips, resources, and encouragement to support you and your whānau through Money Month and beyond.
