An unsettled weather pattern is expected in the lead-up to Christmas for Franklin and South Auckland.
Forecasters caution that conditions for the big day itself will depend on the position of a high-pressure system closer to the time.
MetService Meteorologist John Law said that “at this stage, northern parts of the country are best placed to see the most settled Christmas weather.
“For Franklin and South Auckland, the current outlook is for a generally dry Christmas Day, although westerly winds mean there is still a chance of the odd shower developing through the day.”
He said temperatures are likely to be above average for late December, with a prevailing north-westerly airflow bringing warmer conditions across the region.
However, with a week to go, the forecast is far from locked in.
“It’s looking like an unsettled run-up to Christmas Day, and our forecast for the day itself will be dependent on where high pressure sets up,” Law said.
“Westerly winds could still bring some showers into Franklin.”
Plan B advised
With conditions still subject to change, people planning Christmas Day activities are being advised to stay flexible.
“As with any forecast, we’ll get a clearer picture as we get closer.
“It’s always worth keeping a close eye on the latest updates.”
MetService will be monitoring conditions closely throughout the Christmas period, providing regular updates for those planning beach visits, outdoor lunches or Boxing Day barbecues.
“Christmas is certainly fast approaching, but there is still plenty of time for the forecast to change,” he said.
“It’s always best to have a plan B and keep up with the latest forecasts, even at Christmas time.”
