A fundraiser to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is set to put Pukekohe to the test. A quiz night at the Bledisloe Sports Park Centre, June 19, is timed to coincide with MND Action Month, June.
While tickets have already sold out, spectators are welcome and locals can still pitch in by donating to Motor Neurone Disease NZ, organiser Tania Yate says.
“It’s not about grabbing all the money we can, it’s about making our time count, which is a good motto for us because some of us may not have very long.”
An incurable condition, MND has a life expectancy of just two–three years from diagnosis.
A Pukekohe local, Yate was diagnosed with MND last year after experiencing problems with her motor skills.
“I had a very active lifestyle – bike riding, hiking, netball, touch rugby – but then I fell over and started having problems with my foot. It went from there.”
Motor neurones control the body’s movement. MND prevents those neurones from sending messages from the brain to the affected muscles. For the most part, the condition affects people between aged 50–70, but some as young as 30 have developed MND.
Yate says she has been amazed by the level of support she has received from both Motor Neurone Disease NZ and the Franklin Community Health team.
