Keep them fit this winter!

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Keeping our pets at a healthy weight is one of the best ways to help them live happier,
longer lives. Obesity is an increasing issue for our pet population in New Zealand.

Did you know that 40 per cent of dogs and 30 per cent of cats are overweight? Winter can make this problem worse.

Colder weather often leads to decreased activity levels, while pets consume the same (or even more) calories. Shorter days and wet conditions can also mean fewer walks or outdoor playtime, contributing to gradual weight gain.

Extra kilos can put serious strain on their bodies and lead to a range of health issues:

• Joint pain and arthritis: More weight means more stress on joints, higher risk of ligament injury and long-term pain.

• Urinary issues: Extra weight increases the risk of urinary tract disease and the development of bladder stones. Especially with our feline friends.

• Diabetes: Overweight pets are at higher risk of developing diabetes.

• Breathing difficulties: Excess weight can make it harder for pets to breathe and exercise. This is especially important in our brachycephalic breeds.

• Shorter life span: Not only will obesity decrease how long they are with us, but also their quality of life.

The good news? With the right advice, we can prevent this from happening!

• Regular daily exercise (even short walks) and interactive play sessions help keep your
pet active.

• Measuring food portions accurately with kitchen scales and minimising treats makes a big difference.

• Limit feeding pets human food; it packs a lot more calories for our friends. A one centimetre cubed portion of cheese is equivalent to two and a half hamburgers for us!

• Switching to a specialised diet, such as the Royal Canin Satiety range, can be a helpful option. This diet is designed to keep pets feeling full while reducing calorie intake, supporting safe and effective weight loss. Regular weigh-ins can help track your progress.

We are pleased to offer a free weight management program run by our experienced veterinary nurses. This includes regular weighins, tailored feeding plans, and ongoing support to help your pet achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

If you are unsure whether your pet is overweight, come to the clinic to discuss it with
our friendly team. Let’s help your pet live their best long, healthy life this winter.
