There is some speculation as to whether or not a Franklin farmer has ever won the prestigious Young Farmer of the Year Award. However, all doubt could be removed come July 4.
As previously reported, Aka Aka dairy farmer, Justin Ruygrok is grand-final bound for the second year running. On July 2–4, he will attempt to secure the national title. If he’s successful, it will be a first for Franklin (we think!) since the contest began in 1969.
“Because this is the last time I am able to compete, I am going to give it my all,” Ruygrok told the Times.
Farmers over the age of 30 are no longer considered young – it’s different in town!
The competition is focused on farm-related challenges.
In April, Ruygrok showed his cards at the Northern Regional contest in front of a home crowd at Pukekohe Showgrounds; now, he’ll be hoping his form carries over to the final.
However, even that might not be enough if six other finalists from across the country’s country have their way. With a prize package valued at more than $90,000 on the line, the competition will be tough, NZ Young Farmers chief executive Cheyne Gillooly expects.
“This year’s FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final brings together seven finalists whose stories extend far beyond the farm gate,” she says. “From the youngest contestant just beginning to the oldest giving it their last shot, the strength in which people show up for their community makes me so proud of what Young Farmers represents.”
Among the youngest, Cayden Taylor from Tuakau College is set to compete in the Junior Young Farmer of the Year contest.
