An alleged fleeing driver was cornered in a bedroom last night with the help of a police dog unit and the Eagle chopper.
Police signalled for a Toyota Hilux to stop on Kerrs Road, Manurewa, at 10.20pm last night, August 30. The driver initially followed instructions, Inspector Mark Chivers, Counties Manukau Central Area prevention manager, confirms.
“As an officer exited the patrol car to speak with the occupant, the driver allegedly accelerated away at speed. The vehicle was observed driving through a red light and then travelling at excessive speed along Great South Road.”
Due to the dangerous manner of driving, the vehicle was not pursued.
The Eagle helicopter was dispatched. Eagle’s officers spotted the Hilux parked on Hilltop Road, Clover Park. A police dog unit helped tracked a scent from the vehicle. The suspected driver was found hiding inside a bedroom and was arrested.
“Police have no tolerance for drivers who put themselves and other road users at risk with their dangerous decisions,” Chivers adds. “We continue to remind these drivers that they will be held accountable for their actions.”
A 25-year-old male will appear in Manukau District Court today charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain stopped for an enforcement officer.
