Franklin locals are among the first recognised as conservation champions at the inaugural Taiao Conservation Awards.

Anna McNaughton (Awhitu Coast Care), Awhitu residents Kirsty and David Powell and Hūnua Kōkako Recovery Project volunteers all received accolades.

The awards highlight remarkable contributions to nature and community wellbeing in south and east Auckland, says Carrie Harman from Te Ara Hīkoi (Predator Free Franklin).

“These awards celebrate not only environmental outcomes, but also the sense of connection, purpose and community that grows when people come together to protect nature.

“Behind every conservation success story are people generously giving their time, knowledge, and energy to care for the places they love. Franklin is incredibly fortunate to have so many passionate individuals and groups contributing to the health of our environment.”

McNaughton received the Taonga Tangata Award in recognition of decades of conservation leadership on the Awhitu Peninsula. She has combined scientific expertise, advocacy, community engagement and hands-on action to help achieve lasting conservation outcomes, Harman says.

The Powells received the Rural Award for restoring and protecting their coastal property and surrounding shoreline – extensive revegetation work has improved ecological health and reduced erosion. The couple was also praised for sharing their property with community groups.

The Hūnua Kōkako Recovery Group was highly commended in the Taonga Rōpū (treasured group) category. The group has led efforts helping the native Hūnua kōkako population exceed all recovery targets.

“In addition to the award recipients, numerous Franklin individuals and organisations were nominated, reflecting the depth and diversity of conservation efforts taking place across the region,” Harman adds.

“Collectively, Franklin’s conservation volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year to activities including predator control, native planting, pest plant management, wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration and environmental education.”

The Taiao Conservation Awards are organised by Te Ara Hīkoi, Pest Free Howick Ward and Pest Free South Auckland in partnership with Auckland Council.
