Common WOF failures and how to avoid them

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is an important safety check that helps ensure vehicles on our roads are safe and roadworthy. While many motorists sail through their inspection, a few common issues regularly result in a failed WOF, most of which can be prevented with a little routine maintenance.

One of the most common reasons for failure is worn or damaged tyres. Tyres must have a legal tread depth and be free from significant cuts, bulges, or other defects. Checking your tyres regularly and replacing them when necessary can help avoid an unexpected fail.

Faulty lights are another frequent culprit. Headlights, brake lights, and indicators all need to be working correctly. A quick walk around your vehicle every few weeks can help identify any bulbs that need replacing.

Windscreen issues, such as cracks, chips, or damaged wiper blades, can also lead to a failed inspection. Ensuring your windscreen is clear and your wipers are in good condition will improve visibility and help meet WOF standards.

Brakes and suspension components are also commonly identified during inspections. Unusual noises, vibrations, pulling to one side, or a rough ride may indicate that your vehicle needs attention before its next WOF.

The best way to avoid surprises is to carry out regular maintenance and address minor issues before they become major problems. A simple pre-WOF check with your local mechanic can often identify any concerns and save time, stress, and the cost of a reinspection.

By taking a proactive approach, drivers can help keep their vehicles safe, reliable, and ready to pass their next WOF with confidence.
