North Waikato has recognised contributions to community through the 2026 Mayoral Awards.
The roll of honour includes nineteen local organisations, community groups and volunteers, all of whom have made a difference as coaches and environmental champions, youth leaders and in other capacities.
Their generosity and service have made their communities stronger, more connected and better places to live, says Waikato District Council (WDC) mayor, Aksel Bech.
“Our communities are built by people who choose to give their time, energy and skills to help others,” he says.
“They don’t do it for recognition, but it is important that we take the time to thank them and celebrate everything they do.”
Willingness to support one another is one of the Waikato District’s greatest strengths, Bech adds.
“Strong communities don’t just happen. They’re built by people who step forward whenever something needs doing and that’s exactly what we’ve recognised.”
Winners have been confirmed across a wide range of categories, from community service, youth, sport and recreation, environmental action and due to their support for older people.
The awards were first held in November 2013 by then-Mayor Allan Sanson to formally recognise local volunteers and other community champions.
