A range of art will be showcased in Waiuku this weekend.
WaiArt Art Group founder Gabrielle Brown says she formed the group in 2020 and last year held its inaugural WaiArt Art Show. The event exhibited 80 pieces, drew more than 250 visitors, and sold 30 pieces of art.
“We’re coming off the back of a very successful show last year.”
This year’s event will see the nine members of the WaiArt Art Group be joined by nine “outside artists” including Robin Ranga from Sunset Beach.
A multi-media artist working across bronze, paint and ceramics, Ranga draws inspiration from both the human figure and the natural world. Her work explores questions of connection, compassion and possibility, often inviting us to pause and consider a deceptively simple question: “What matters most?”
Her work has received national recognition and prestigious awards, including recognition through the Portage Ceramic Awards and multiple People’s Choice Awards. She was also awarded a residency at the Nongyuan International Arts Village in Chengdu, China, in 2016, and was an invited participant in Auckland’s Art in the Park from 2021–2023.
For artist Jane Thorne, insects are endlessly fascinating – their unusual shapes, intricate details and often extraordinary colours feature prominently in much of her work.
A Bachelor of Visual Arts graduate, Thorne has exhibited with galleries including Uxbridge, McPherson Gallery and Railway Street Gallery, with her work now held in private collections in New Zealand and Europe. She is also an illustrator and face painter, and volunteers as a curator at the Waiuku Museum.
Brown says there is no set theme for the show, with a range of mediums and works to be on display. Art will be available to purchase, refreshments sold by the ladies of the Waiuku Lions, and a kids’ activity table. WaiArt Art Group’s 2027 calendar will also be launched at the event.
Visitors can also vote for their people’s choice award.
