Anyone for boccia? Takanini hosting national champs

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

They’ll be looking to push hard at Pulman Arena, Takanini, when the 2026 NZ National Boccia Championships hit town.

Similar to lawn bowls and petanque, boccia is intended for athletes with physical disabilities.

From today (September 24) until Sunday, September 27, some of the best boccia players from throughout New Zealand and Australia will compete in individual, team and pairs categories.

For many athletes, the competition is about much more than winning. Boccia NZ GM Scott Martin says.

“The national championships is the pinnacle of our domestic calendar, where athletes renew friendly rivalries and compete for national bragging rights,” he says. “While the competition on court is fierce, the real highlight of the event is the opportunity to make new connections and enjoy the sense of community that exists off court.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the national championships back to Auckland for the first time in 10 years. This event will be a great advertisement for the sport in the region.”

In addition, as Canberra is set to host a World Boccia Challenger event in 2027, this year’s national championships will provide an early opportunity for aspiring athletes to highlight their skills and strengthen their chances of international selection.

A popular para sport, boccia relies on strategy, precision and accuracy. It is played by seated competitors on a smooth indoor court. Athletes propel leather balls towards a jack by throwing, kicking or using a ramp. Competitors are grouped by impairment type.

While the best place to experience the national champs is courtside at Pulman Arena, the action on one court will be livestreamed via the Boccia New Zealand YouTube channel – click here for details.
