Join Awhitu Peninsula Landcare as the new Pest Control Field Operator on the magnificent Āwhitu Peninsula. This is a fixed-term role to mid-December for 40 hours per week.
Awhitu Peninsula Landcare is a community conservation group in Franklin, Auckland. Our vision is for a rejuvenated Āwhitu where native wildlife flourishes in healthy ecosystems, cherished and supported by the people. Our mahi includes native revegetation, pest animal and plant control, environmental monitoring and pathogen control.
We have a well-established pest control programme across the peninsula with a focus on possum control, though we do undertake some additional controls for mustelids, rodents and more. Our team manage an extensive network of trap and bait stations, and we support the local community with advice and resources.
The responsibilities of the role include:
- Establishing a higher density of traps in our possum barriers to slow reinvasion,
- Engaging with the community to promote pest control activities and to supply resources,
- Using a variety of control methods to knock-down possum hotspots,
- Undertaking monitoring to assess possum numbers before and after control,
- Collaborating with Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua to help realise the outcomes in the Kaitiakitanga Plan,
- Maintaining accurate records and contributing to accountability reports,
- Contributing to a communications, education and engagement programme.
Our ideal candidate would:
- Be an experienced tramper, physically fit and able to navigate steep terrain,
- Have a good understanding of the environment and community on the Āwhitu,
- Have excellent relationship management skills, including experience working with mana whenua,
- Uphold strong health and safety protocols,
- Have experience with a range of possum traps and toxins, and/or hunting,
- Work autonomously, managing competing demands and pressures, and
- Be confident using GPS navigation, the Microsoft Office suite and Trap.NZ.
A current Firearms Licence or Controlled Substances Licence, or a background in pest control, ecology or communications would be beneficial. A current drivers licence and vehicle are necessary.
