Papakura has been setting the table while welcoming guests from throughout Auckland and beyond.
A new initiative by the Papakura Business Association, backed by the Papakura Local Board, Plate Up Papakura (finishes August 31!) is intended to celebrate the flavours of south Auckland.
“Initiatives such as Plate Up Papakura are key to revitalising the region [by] celebrating the incredible cultural diversity that we’re so proud of here in south Auckland,” local board chair, Kelvin Hieatt says.
“Locals have always known there’s something special cooking out here, and it’s about time we share the best parts of our suburb with the rest of Auckland.”
This veritable smorgasbord is spanning 14 eateries, showcasing a colourful array of cuisine. From Turkish, Japanese, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Nepalese to Tex-Mex, there is much on the menu.
Participating eateries include Broke Boy Taco, Viet Soul, Satay Noodle House, Red Earth, and The Beer Spot.
The celebration is part of a wider initiative to reinvigorate Papakura’s food scene along Great South Road, attracting diners from surrounding regions to local tables due to the calibre of hospitality, entertainment and, of course, the food.
Owner and well-known head chef at the award-winning Broke Boy Taco, Sean Yarbrough, says Plate Up is a gamechanger.
“There are so many creative, talented food vendors out here, it’s crazy! Ponsonby and Sandringham are great too, but if you want real global flavours literally in your backyard, Papakura’s the place.”
