Police have confirmed name of the armed man who died after being shot by police at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre on Thursday, August 13 – he was Hapai Otene (33) of Auckland.
The post-mortem examination and formal identification were completed today.
“Police extend our sympathies to Mr Otene’s whānau at this difficult time,” Auckland City district commander, Superintendent Sunny Patel, says. “The critical incident investigation remains ongoing and is piecing together the events that unfolded on Thursday.
“I’m aware there is much discussion about the events that occurred and it’s important that for all parties concerned that we allow due process to be carried out. There are several detailed investigations underway, and these will take time to reach their conclusion.”
