Police say they completed a scene examination at the shopping centre in Mt Wellington overnight.
Superintendent Sunny Patel, the Auckland City Police district commander, says a post-mortem examination is under way today Friday.
“As part of completing the scene examination, Ngāti Paoa led a blessing at the scene last night.
“I understand the events that unfolded have shaken people that were there at the time, and the wider community.
“There will be an increased police presence around Sylvia Park Shopping Centre over the coming week to provide reassurance for the public.”
An investigation team will continue to piece together the deceased’s movements and what led to yesterday’s events at the shopping centre, Patel says.
It will involve reviewing a large amount of CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses over the coming weeks.
“We’re supporting our staff that responded to yesterday’s events. This was a very fast-moving event, and our thoughts are with everyone involved.”
Police say they have notified the man’s next of kin.
“We visited the family last night and we extend our condolences to them, and support will be made available to them as part of the investigation,” says Patel.
Police say they will publicly release further details once post-mortem and formal identification procedures are complete.
Enquiries will continue, including the Critical Incident Investigation as well as the Independent Police Conduct Authority’s own separate investigation, they say.
“Police will continue to provide any updates as they are available.”
