An investigation targeting recent online Marketplace scams has led to the arrest of a 26-year-old woman.
Over the past two months, the woman received high-value items including vehicles and electronic goods, with a total value of around $100,000,” Hamilton police allege.
“It is believed Marketplace sellers met with the woman, who has then allegedly provided fake bank transfers to purchase and receive the item,” Detective Sergeant Logan Oliver says.
The case serves as a reminder for any sellers on Marketplace (and other similar websites and social media pages) to ensure they take the right steps to avoid scams, he adds.
“When you’re selling, never trust a screenshot anyone shows or sends you that says a payment has been made. Check your own bank account to make sure payment has gone through.
“Alternatively, it is best for all parties to agree to pay, or be paid, for items in cash and in-person. Ideally in a public place with CCTV coverage.”
The woman appeared in Hamilton District Court facing charges related to using a forged document, theft and using a document for pecuniary advantage. She has been remanded on bail and is due to reappear on 31 July.
