The mysterious smell that has been drifting through central Pukekohe has been confirmed as a “discharge of smelly vapours,” not a gas leak.
The smell is linked to vapours from Glide, a waste oil re-refining facility on Subway Road, the Times has confirmed.
Glide’s John Knox says the company received more than a dozen phone calls from concerned members of the public.
He was pleased people contacted emergency services, but confirms that there is nothing to be worried about.
Reports of the odour have been made from across central Pukekohe during the last couple of days.
People in central Pukekohe were evacuated from several buildings yesterday after a strong, unexplained gas-like smell prompted calls to emergency services.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) investigated at the time but found no detectable gas or dangerous substances.
Glide has been operating for approximately 10 months and is still fine-tuning its processes, finding certain methods that work and others that don’t.
The process that caused the odour has since been paused as part of the company’s standard procedures while they find improvements to minimise any inadvertent release of vapors.
Update: Glide’s Pukekohe plant has been in place for approximately 10 months, but it has been operating for the past two months.
