A Pukekohe housing project by city-based architects Ashton Mitchell has proved a hit with judges in the recent Auckland Architecture Awards.
Noted in the Housing – Multi-unit category, Seddon Street’s Rongo Te Ata features 14 one and two bedroom apartments with landscaped communal spaces, including a sensory garden, barbecue area and vegetable gardens.
Translating (roughly) as ‘peace of the dawn’, Rongo Te Ata’s name was gifted by Ngati Tamaoho, intended to embody a sense of peace and new beginnings.
The central carved tōtara pou, depicts the legendary navigator of the Tainui waka being uplifted by Tāwhirimātea, the god of the winds – a symbol of being guided and supported as a community.
Rongo Te Ata was one of many inspired buildings to claim accolades. Jury convenor and architect Rachael Rush says the fifty projects from Auckland and Northland were all worthy winners.
“With an exceptionally strong field of entries this year, the jury saw the transformative impact architecture can have on our lives – shaping our cities, supporting investment, and creating communities,” she says.
“The quality of heritage and renovation projects reflected a growing appreciation for adapting and renewing existing buildings.”
