Budget week is a significant week in Parliament. Although many will be unaware of the
details and specifics covered, there are always a few headline items that reach the media.
I want to highlight some of the things in my ministerial portfolios that also deliver on the
New Zealand First and National coalition agreement.
New Zealand First continues to look to the practical, common-sense actions that support the hardworking kiwi battlers who are the backbone of our communities.
Firstly, there has been a $35 million investment in our national ambulance services over fouryears. Significantly, this includes the establishment of two ambulance hubs in Auckland, one of which will be in South Auckland.
This also funds additional technology and training.
The total package for ambulance services, both St John’s and Wellington Free Ambulance,
will be finalised following the current contract negotiations in the near future. The proportion of Government funding has continued to increase – they have already received an additional $77.7 million this term of government.
The next announcement was for the NZ Customs Service with $70 million over four years
delivering upgraded X-ray capability, enhanced security and, importantly, equipment and
training to enhance the safety of our front-line staff.
New Zealand First, in our coalition agreement, recognised the importance of maternity care, and this budget has delivered on this priority with $34.4 million over four years to increase maternity capacity so mothers can have care for up to three days after giving birth.
The final budget announcement that I would like to highlight is the practical enhancement to the Super Gold Card. New Zealand First committed to maximising the benefits of the card, and we are delivering. With many older New Zealanders not holding passports or driver’s licenses, holding an acceptable form of primary ID represents a cost and challenge. A budget has been provided to upgrade the card to include a photograph and enhanced security features meeting the standards required for primary ID.
It continues to be an honour to serve as a government Minister and as an MP for New
Zealand First being able to deliver on our commitments.
