It might be unique to Aotearoa, but Matariki could catch on around the world thanks to Dhanak Humayun.
Showcasing her Matariki-inspired couture collection at the Cannes Film Festival was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Humayun told the Times.
“I attended red carpet events, networking functions, fashion-related gatherings and spent time meeting people from the film and fashion industries. I also explored the city and experienced the festival’s atmosphere,” she says.
“It was exciting to be surrounded by so many talented people from the international film industry.”
The Pokeno local presented pieces from her collection inspired by the stars – all going well, some of the world’s most well-known film stars could soon be wearing her creations.
“Each gown features storytelling elements that reflect the significance of Matariki. The collection included several unique couture pieces created specifically for this international opportunity.”
Humayun was invited to attend, but covering the cost saw her take to social media, raffling a dress valued at $1200. The response was overwhelming – within two weeks, she had raised the money she needed.
Originally from India and raised in Kuwait, Humayun moved to New Zealand when she married 17 years ago.
In 2021, she started her own fashion label, Rakshi’s Designs, named after her mother who inspired her love of fashion.
“She used to make so many beautiful frocks,” Humayun recalls. “I thought why not name [the label after my mum because that’s where it all started.”
Looking ahead, a little further down the red carpet, she plans to continue creating new collections and promoting New Zealand-inspired fashion at home and overseas.
“I want to celebrate culture, creativity and storytelling through design,” Humayun confirms.
