Kiwis have been rolling out the ribbon recently, holding Pink Ribbon events across the country in efforts to raise money and awareness for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Among them is Michelle Capstick who recently hosted a Pink Ribbon Brunch at Mr Henry, a family restaurant in Patumahoe. Capstick decided to play her part after her niece died of breast cancer aged just 38.
“I wanted to do something in her memory, so I asked friends (Kathryn and Dianna) if they would like to host one with me,” she says. “After that, I approached the owner of Mr Henry, Kane Williams, and we found he was on board straight away.”
Attracting 30–40 people, the event went off without a hitch as Capstick and her friends raised approximately $4000. As well as plenty of food, Williams served special pink cocktails to mark the occasion. Raffles also contributed to the total raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The funds will help fund breast cancer education, patient support, research and advocacy. The community response was amazing, with people coming from as far away as Waiuku to give generously to the cause, she says.
“This was our first Pink Ribbon Day brunch, but it won’t be our last.”
In the meantime, Capstick has a simple piece of advice:
“Get yourself checked. It could save your life!”
