Insulation – bats in the attic!

No form of heating is quite so heart-warming than a roaring wood burning fire, but heat pumps can be more efficient when the chilly weather bites. Then again, no form is all it can be without sufficient insulation.

Homes that were built decades ago (or more) were constructed when energy was, comparatively speaking, cheaper than it is today. While character houses are appealing, there’s no need to endure a cold winter when a range of insulation options can be added with little visible impact.

Start by looking up. Ceiling insulation does much of the heavy lifting, and modern bats are designed to last for many years. However, it’s worth checking them every decade or so. They can be disturbed by pests, affected by moisture from leaks, or simply become less effective as dust builds up.

Walls are another common source of heat loss but fixing them doesn’t always require major renovations. Blown or spray foam insulation can be inserted through small access points, filling cavities without the need to remove linings. It’s a relatively unobtrusive way to improve warmth.

Looking down, underfloor insulation is usually straightforward to install and can make a noticeable difference. Access may be awkward in tighter spaces, but for those comfortable with DIY it can prove a cost-effective upgrade.

Doors and windows are also key culprits when it comes to drafts. While double glazing is effective, it may not suit the look of older homes. Alternatives such as draft stoppers and well-fitted thermal curtains can significantly reduce heat loss while preserving original features.

If you’re planning a new build, it pays to go beyond minimum requirements. Investing in higher-quality insulation from the outset will deliver better comfort and lower energy costs over time.

With a bit of planning, and the right approach, even older homes can become warmer, more efficient and more comfortable before the freezing season really sets in.
