The latest political poll by 1News Verian shows the National Party has fallen four per cent to 30 per cent while the Labour Party is up five per cent to 37.
The results were publicly released on 1News last night, April 19, and have added to ongoing speculation about Prime Minster and Botany MP Christopher Luxon’s leadership of National.
The Greens are on 11 per cent, New Zealand First is on 10 per cent, ACT is on seven per cent, the Opportunity Party is on three per cent and Te Pāti Māori is on two per cent.
Based on the new numbers, if the general election were held today, the left-wing bloc of Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori would be able to form a Government with 66 seats in Parliament.
The centre-right bloc of National, New Zealand First and ACT would have 58 seats.
In the preferred prime minister poll, Luxon has fallen four per cent to 16, while Labour leader Chris Hipkins is down one per cent to 19.
1News reported that is Luxon’s lowest result since becoming the party’s leader.
The other MPs to feature in the preferred prime minister poll are NZ First leader Winston Peters on 12 per cent, Greens co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick on six per cent, ACT leader David Seymour on four per cent, and senior National MP and Government minister Chris Bishop on two per cent.
The 1News Verian poll also shows economic optimism is down by 14 per cent to 26 per cent and pessimism is up by 21 per cent to 52 per cent.
