Just days after their last strike, New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) members are ready to down tools again… and again.
During the next strike – between midday and 1pm today (April 10) – and twice a week thereafter, firefighters may not attend less serious incidents.
These include responses to private fire alarms where there is no sign of fire, small rubbish fires, traffic management and animal rescues.
However, all 111 calls will be received and responded to, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) deputy national commander Megan Stiffler says.
“Our advice remains the same – if there is a fire, evacuate early, get out, stay out, then call 111. However, our response times will be delayed in impacted areas as volunteer crews will be responding from the next closest location. So, we are asking the public to remain extra careful.”
FENZ has established a process with Hato Hone St John for responding to medical events.
The strikes are the latest action by the NZPFU related to pay and working conditions.
“We remain focused on achieving a fair and sustainable settlement with the NZPFU so we can continue working to keep our communities safe,” Stiffler adds.
