Police have made an arrest in connection with an arson attack that caused more than $50,000 worth of damage to a Rānui sports club last year.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting said the fire was allegedly deliberately lit in a rubbish bin leaning against the Birdwood Road BMX club’s canteen.
“This fire was intentionally started in a bin full of paper and rubbish,” he said.
“Once it took hold the flames engulfed the canteen and caused extensive damage to the inside and outside.”
CCTV footage captured the incident and helped the Waitematā West CIB investigation identify a suspect.
“We are pleased to have been able to hold a person to account for their actions,” Bunting said.
“The BMX club worked really hard to set up the canteen and it was part of what kept them running. The alleged offender’s thoughtless actions have done real harm to this community.”
A 15-year-old boy has been referred to Youth Aid.
A Givealittle page set up by club members has raised more than $1,500 towards rebuilding the canteen.
