Another fire which broke out in Waiuku overnight, the second on Kitchener Road in as many days, is related to the massive blaze that burned overnight on Monday.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) told the Franklin Times they were called to the latest blaze at about 3.30am today, November 26.
Early this morning, FENZ shift manager Paul Radden said the fire involved a shipping container on Kitchener Road. Three appliances responded from Waiuku and Patumahoe stations.
In an update later today, FENZ shift manager, Ryan Geen said the fire involved two shipping containers that were related to the original fire on Monday night, which started in a yard at a recycling plant at Waiuku Business Park.
He said fire crew left the scene at 5.23am today.
Waiuku resident Charise Savage told the Franklin Times she heard the town’s siren sounding at around 3.30am.
“It’s terrible this is happening again,” she said.
Police said they were not required and did not attend.
On Monday the major fire tore through the Future Post yard at the Waiuku Business Park, on Kitchener Road. That blaze broke out just before 11pm on Monday, November 24, and was extinguished by just after 10am yesterday.
Police immediately treated the blaze as suspicious. A scene guard remained in place overnight ahead of a full examination on Tuesday.
Acting Detective Inspector Chris Robson, of Counties Manukau CIB, said a search warrant was executed at a Waiuku property last night.
“A 30-year-old local man was arrested at the property and has been charged with arson.”
The man was due to appear in the Pukekohe District Court today.
