Tāmaki Drive will be closed again today, October 28, this time to allow a hīkoi marking Rā Whakamana, the National Day of Solidarity.
Police say the seaward (eastbound) lane between Ōkahu Bay and the Strand in Parnell will be closed from 11.45 am to around 1.15 pm with the closure in place “to ensure the safety of all road users while the hīkoi takes place.”
It follows a disruption last week, when an electric bus fire forced the closure of the same road.
Police told the Franklin Times the hīkoi is part of Rā Whakamana, the National Day of Solidarity, led by the National Iwi Chairs Forum and the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU).
“The hīkoi will highlight Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Regulatory Standards Bill, the Equal Pay Amendment Act, and the erosion of workers’ protection and rights,” police said.
According to organisers, Rā Whakamana is a nationwide stand for tino rangatiratanga, workers’ rights, and cultural wellbeing.
It marks both the anniversary of the 1835 Declaration of Independence (He Whakaputanga) and the 1890 Labour Day demonstrations, uniting iwi and unions in a shared message of solidarity.
The day’s kaupapa, announced jointly by the CTU and the National Iwi Chairs Forum, calls for action on fair pay, Te Tiriti commitments, and the rights of women, Māori and Pasifika workers.
Support has been expressed by multiple unions, including the Public Service Association (PSA) and the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ).
Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, expect delays, and consider alternative routes during the temporary closure.
