Police have confirmed one person has died following a crash involving a bus in Parnell last night.

Emergency services were called to Tāmaki Drive about 9.20pm on Wednesday, after reports of a collision between an electric bus and a car.

One other person sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

Tāmaki Drive remains closed in both directions this morning between The Strand and Ngapipi Road, with motorists advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while emergency services work to clear the scene.

The crash involved a fire reportedly engulfing an electric bus.

Hato Hone St John said it responded with three ambulances and two rapid response vehicles.

“Two patients were assessed at the scene and both were transported to Auckland City Hospital, one in a serious condition and the other moderate.”

They were not able to comment on the fatality.

Tamaki Drive, between The Strand and Ngapipi Road, remains closed in both directions.

All road users are asked to avoid the area, and seek and alternative route while the scene is cleared.

“Due to the buses electric battery the area could remain hazardous,” police said.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.

Multiple fire crews from twelve stations across Auckland were dispatched to the scene for what was classified as a heavy rescue by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

Crews responded from across Auckland, including Auckland City, Parnell, Avondale, Remuera, Papatoetoe, Ellerslie, Saint Heliers, Ōtāhuhu, Grey Lynn, Birkenhead, Mount Wellington, and Devonport.

FENZ told the Franklin Times that it was alerted to a motor vehicle crash in Tamaki Drive, Parnell at 9.20pm last night.

“About 16 fire trucks attended to extinguish the fire, along with several support vehicles. As of 3am, two trucks remain at the scene,” a spokesperson said.

Auckland Transport issued an alert to motorists advising detours and delays between Ngapipi Road and The Strand, urging drivers to follow police instructions.

Police investigations and vehicle recovery remain ongoing.
