Aucklanders are being invited to share their views on a proposed six-month trial of fortnightly kerbside rubbish collections, set to run in selected suburbs next year.
Consultation will take place from 13 to 31 October 2025, with the trial (if approved) beginning in late February 2026 in parts of Te Atatū Peninsula, Panmure – Tāmaki, and Clendon Park – Weymouth.
Under the proposal, general rubbish collections would shift from weekly to fortnightly, while weekly food scraps and fortnightly recycling services would remain unchanged.
General Manager of Waste Solutions Justine Haves said in a statement on October 1, no decision had yet been made, and community feedback would be critical.
“Now is your opportunity to tell us what you think. We want to understand how households feel about the idea of a fortnightly rubbish collection trial.”
Haves said the proposal was part of efforts to cut down the more than one million tonnes of rubbish Aucklanders send to landfill each year.
“The proposed trial is a chance to explore new ways to reduce waste and protect our environment. By sharing your views, you’ll help shape the future of Auckland’s waste services as we move towards a more sustainable Tāmaki Makaurau.”
Similar trials in Hamilton and Tauranga have seen household waste to landfill almost halved.
If the trial goes ahead, ratepayers in the trial areas would get a reduction on their 2026 rates bill, ranging from $23.30 to $46.50 depending on bin size.
Extra financial incentives would also be available for households that rarely put their bin out.
Auckland Council says audits show around half of what goes in household rubbish bins could instead be recycled or reprocessed. For those who need more capacity, larger or additional bins would be made available at no cost during the trial.
Feedback can be given online, at drop-in sessions, or via forms at libraries and local board offices. The council’s Governing Body will decide in December whether the trial will proceed.
