A 30-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder following the deaths of two people in the south Auckland suburb of Wattle Downs last week.
As previously reported, emergency services were called to a Gambare Place address at about 1.45pm on Thursday, August 27 after receiving a report of a person armed with a handgun at the property and an injured woman.
Two people were found dead when police arrived.
Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua, of Counties Manukau Police’s criminal investigation branch, says police had been speaking with a man who was in custody over an unrelated offence.
The man was charged with two counts of murder this morning.
“Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind the killings, and this will include identifying any other persons who may be involved,” Va’aelua says.
“We are pleased to have been able to charge this man in relation to this tragic incident, however the investigation remains ongoing and we are not ruling out any further arrests.”
Police and Victim Support Services are continuing to provide support to the victims’ whānau.
Police say further details about the victims will be released in due course.
The 30-year-old man is due to appear in Manukau District Court today, September 1.
Police say they’re limited in providing further comment as the matter is now before the court.
