On Saturday, July 25, police staff and families joined athletes and supporters at Takapuna Beach for the Special Olympics New Zealand Polar
Plunge, braving the icy winter waters to raise funds for a fantastic cause.
The event, organised through the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), encouraged participants to “take the plunge and be part of something special on a good old fashioned mid-winter morning” while supporting Special Olympics athletes across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Despite the freezing conditions, the atmosphere was full of energy, laughter, and community spirit.
Police personnel enjoyed meeting and interacting with athletes from our local area, strengthening relationships and celebrating the achievements of Special Olympics participants.
A highlight of the morning was watching police district commanders make a splash by jumping from a police boat into the ocean, much to the delight of the crowd.
Polar Plunge Auckland was a nationwide success, raising an impressive $46,677 to support Special Olympics athletes in pursuing their sporting goals and opportunities.
After the chilly dip, participants were treated to warm food and hot drinks, providing a welcome chance to thaw out and reflect on a
memorable morning of community engagement, inclusion, and support.
Police are proud to support events such as the Polar Plunge, which bring communities together and help create positive opportunities for athletes across the motu (country).
