A stolen vehicle carrying four youths was spiked in Papakura after being spotted by the Police Eagle Helicopter late last night.
The Toyota Aqua was seen travelling through East Tamaki just after 11pm with the Eagle crew alerting officers on the ground to its location.
The driver appears to have attempted to run down an officer setting up spikes in Otara, police say, before fleeing onto the Southern Motorway at high speed and without headlights.
“It’s incredibly lucky the officer managed to get out of the way, reckless acts like this will not be tolerated,” says Inspector Rod Honan, Counties Manukau police.
The vehicle was eventually spiked and came to a stop on Dominion Road, Papakura.
All four occupants, aged between 13 and 15, were taken into custody and have been referred to Youth Aid Services.
