A motorbike rider who failed to stop for police and instead hit the accelerator this morning is now facing charges.
The 22-year-old man was spotted travelling along Puhinui Road, Manukau toward the Southern Motorway at 3.20am.
When the vehicle approached the motorway on-ramp police activated their lights and sirens, but the biker continued to accelerate says Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson, Counties Manukau Police.
“Officers had quickly pulled back, and the Police Eagle helicopter had taken over to maintain observations on the rider,” she says.
The motorbike exited at the Takanini turn off and travelled through Papakura.
“Eagle continued to follow the rider until he pulled into a garage at a nearby address where he was quickly taken into custody,” McPherson says.
The rider has been charged with failing to stop and his bike has been impounded for six months.
