The chance to learn more about books from authors, We Read Auckland sees libraries across the region (including Pukekohe and Takanini) help share the stories behind our stories.
The programme showcases the creativity and diversity of the city’s literature, Auckland Council Community Committee chair, councillor Julie Fairey explains.
“We Read Auckland celebrates the stories connecting our communities and shares the many local voices that make our region unique,” she says. “It is a wonderful opportunity for Aucklanders to read our local authors and discover the vast range of topics on offer which range from poetry, prison reform to the best potato salad recipes.”
On August 25, renowned Māori writers Witi Ihimaera Smiler and Eugene Bingham interview each other about their most recent works at the Takanini Library.
This year, the Bestie Collection features 24 recently published titles by Auckland authors spanning fiction and non-fiction, including poetry and even a cookbook.
Initiated in 2021, the programme aims to champion regional talent, helping to encourage readers to read and writers to write. The initiative includes the Taiohi Writing Competition for writers aged 13-18.
Last year’s winning submissions will be published later this month in the anthology Surface: Emerging Voices of Tāmaki Makaurau.
There is plenty in this year’s collection to inspire, Auckland Council’s head of library and learning services, Catherine Leonard, adds.
“Whether you’re discovering your next favourite book, meeting an author whose work you admire, encouraging your teenager to become a published author or taking part in a writing workshop, We Read Auckland offers something for everyone.
“Across Tāmaki Makaurau, our library network continues to champion local writers, connect communities through stories, and inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning.”
All events are free to attend, but bookings are recommended.
