The barriers and detours are now down and the stop/go men have gone home as business as usual returns to Pukekohe’s main road.
Although it caused a little confusion among motorists, roadworks on King Street – at the intersection with Hall Street – have been completed.
As previously reported online, the new zebra crossings replace existing ‘courtesy crossings’, which required pedestrians give way to traffic, just as they would when crossing anywhere else.
‘In line with other streetscape and pedestrian improvements to improve walkability and prepare for more pedestrians, we are changing three existing courtesy crossings to pedestrian zebra crossings,’ a letter from the Auckland Urban Development Office’s project confirmed.
Additional work was required at the site due to significant structural damage.
King Street isn’t the only Pukekohe thoroughfare upgraded recently. Reynolds Road (near Cape Hill) now has a new pedestrian refuge intended to improve safety. The upgrade is part of the Franklin Paths Programme – see franklinpathsandtrails.org for details.
