How long have you been an educator and where did you train?
I’ve been an educator for 16 years, after training at Victoria University of Wellington.
When did you become the principal of KingsGate School?
I became principal in 2018.
What’s the best thing about being an educator and principal?
The best thing about being an educator and principal is seeing young people grow, not
just academically, but as people.
Over time, I’ve come to appreciate that while schools help students gain knowledge and skills, our greatest opportunity is to help them develop character, resilience and a sense of purpose.
When students feel known, valued and challenged to become the best version of themselves, they flourish. Being part of that journey is both a privilege and a responsibility that I never take for granted.

What makes KingsGate special is that we see education as being about the whole person.
We want every student to be known, challenged and encouraged to become the best version of themselves, academically, socially and personally.

Is there anything you’d like improved in the education/school management sector?
My hope for education is that we never lose sight of what matters most.
Every student should leave school with strong literacy and numeracy skills because these are the foundation for lifelong learning.
When students can confidently read, write, and apply mathematics, they are equipped to succeed across every subject and every pathway in life.
From that foundation, schools have the privilege of helping young people grow in character,
resilience, purpose, and a desire to contribute to others.

How is the relationship between KingsGate School and its immediate local community?
We have a positive and growing relationship with our local community.
KingsGate School exists to serve the families of Franklin, and we’re committed to being a school that is known not only for academic excellence but also for developing young people
of strong character who make a positive contribution wherever they go.
We’re passionate about working alongside parents, local organisations, churches,
businesses, and neighbouring schools to ensure our students receive the very best
opportunities.
